London is one of those places where you know the area around where you live and where you work, but not necessarily the places in between.
Yesterday my friend Victoria suggested that we should go to Streatham Common for lunch at the cafe and a stroll round the gardens, known as the Rookery. Although this can only be about four miles from where I live, I had never been there before. I often drive down one side of Streatham Common on the way to see my ponies, but this was the first time I had actually stopped to have a walk on the common.
It was a glorious sunny day, and there were a lot of people enjoying themselves pottering round the gardens or sitting at one of the many tables for a picnic. It’s true to say that the gardens weren’t spectacular, but they were full of roses and squirrels and the odd mallard – all the things I like, in fact.
And it was yet another reminder that London is full of parks and open spaces where we can get away from the hustle and bustle of city life. I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.
