Well I can tell you exactly where he is, or, at least, was.
Yesterday he was in London’s Covent Garden, and not just one of him, but I should think at least twenty to thirty different versions of him. It was the annual convention of Punch and Judy “professors” (as the puppeteers are known), and there were wall to wall performances in the churchyard of St Paul’s church – all free.
Punch and Judy shows have their origin in the Italian commedia dell’arte, and they were initially intended as entertainment for adults. These days the shows are considered more specifically for children. However, yesterday there was at least one adult dressed up as Punch, and certainly the churchyard was crammed with both adults and children, all enjoying the slapstick humour.
